"Animals are my friends...and I don't eat my friends."
Quotes like this one from George Bernard Shaw are scattered throughout the pages of this lively and comprehensive guide for Ottawa area vegetarians.
The guide was put together in an effort to make life easier for vegetarians living in the Ottawa region, and it certainly succeeds. Listings are provided for restaurants, stores and catering services where vegetarian food is featured. Restaurants are divided into vegetarian, near vegetarian and those where vegetarian meals are available. The latter are also sorted into ethnic categories: Indian, Lebanese, Mexican, Oriental and Caribbean.
Natural food and other stores which carry vegetarian products are catalogued, including ethnic food stores where many such items are available. There is also a listing of cruelty-free products, such as cosmetics and household goods. In addition, there is a section on alternative medicine services and herbal remedies and where these can be obtained.
An excellent list of vegetarian cookbooks, books on vegetarianism, periodicals and bookstores where they are available is provided to the budding vegetarian. Equally helpful is the description of a number of basic foods which form the basis of a vegetarian diet. The book also provides interesting vegetarian recipes.
An introduction to vegetarianism, including facts on basic vegetarian nutrition and a list of famous vegetarians, completes this attractive and very readable booklet. I would recommend it to anyone who is presently following the vegetarian way or considering it.
To date, the guide has proved so popular that two editions have been published. A spring edition, "The Ottawa Vegetarian—A Quarterly Guide and Journal for Vegetarians in the Region," will be available soon. The old edition cost ninety-nine cents.
