Canterbury's environmental club is called SAGE, or Student Action Group for the Environment.
Our main projects include a recycling program, composting and tree planting. We also fundraise to run these programs.
Right now, we are in desperate need of assistance. We need to upgrade our current programs. We must establish reusable dishes in our cafeteria and develop organic gardens, wildflowers, and other alternatives to sod. We must encourage biodiversity on our school property. We must provide safe habitat for wildlife, and protect our school grounds from the pollution that surrounds us.
In order to accomplish these goals, and help others to do the same, SAGE has been establishing a network of high school environmental clubs. This network had its first meeting March 2. Twenty-five people attended from five schools. The network will help us to empower each other and improve the effect we have not only on our own schools, but in the whole region.
As an example of the great effect we could have on our region, Lisgar Collegiate Institute has produced a waste reduction plan as the result of a waste audit. Lisgar's plan will not be implemented because the Ottawa Board of Education (OBE) says they will not save enough money to make it worth their while. However, if a waste audit was performed in all OBE schools, the resulting waste reduction plans would save the OBE enough money to make it worth their while.
In order to achieve these things, we need participation from every high school in every board in the Ottawa-Carleton region. If you are involved in the environment club in your high school, please give me a call at 730-7872.
