Brewer Pond Needs Help

I read with interest John Bond's article on the Brewer Pond naturalization project in the March 1996 PEN. As one of the Ottawa South enthusiasts participating in the project, I am pleased to see this wider recognition of our efforts.

However, I am concerned that John's article presents an overly optimistic picture of the situation at Brewer Pond. Many volunteers have planted many hundreds of trees, and the area immediately surrounding the pond is regenerating nicely. But other areas are under constant vehicular assault, and parts which should be regenerating remain severely degraded.

Our group has worked with City Hall to prevent vehicle entry. But today's four-by-four vehicles have no trouble jumping curbs, dodging boulders, and pushing over fenceposts. Our community needs help adding more effective fencing.

Any ideas readers have that will help us prevent vehicle access to the Pond area will be greatly appreciated. Please call me at 730-7459 with your suggestions.
