In the name of prosperity, the Ontario Conservative government is considering eliminating parts of the building code which they say cost builders additional money to implement.
The government is going "Back to Basics" with its consultation paper on the focus of the Ontario Building Code. The original purpose of the building code was to protect health and safety. It has since expanded to include "standards for public health and safety, fire protection, structural sufficiency, accessibility, conservation and environmental integrity with respect to buildings."
If you are concerned about the possible elimination of some or all of these provisions from the code, please contact the Planning and Building Policy Section of the Housing Development and Buildings Branch at (416) 585-6515. To state your opinion you can write to Ann Borooah, Director, Housing Development and Buildings Branch, Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, 777 Bay Street, 2nd floor, Toronto, Ontario, M5G 2E5.
