East Coast Connection for PERC

Who would have thought that an article entitled “Loving Our Local” (Winter 2019 Edition) would lead to a connection in St. John’s, Newfoundland! That’s exactly what happened when Kim Todd, a founder of the St. John’s social enterprise Guide to the Good, visited Ottawa and picked up a copy of the PEN. “We really loved the article,” Guide to the Good’s Publication Specialist Katherine Saunders said in an email when she reached out.
Guide to the Good does similar work to the Sustainable Enterprise Alliance, featured in that PEN piece, and they were interested in reprinting the piece. We said sure, and asked to learn about about how Newfoundlanders are loving their local.

Here’s the basics on Guide to the Good:

All over Newfoundland and Labrador, people are building companies that bring amazing things to the community – retail, social enterprises, kitchen-table shops. Guide to the Good is a social enterprise start-up that makes it easier for people to choose local, social and green for their purchasing and lifestyle choices.

An all-new Guide to the Good website http://www.guidetothegood.ca is coming soon! Our province is chock-a-block full of amazing people who are striving for a better well-being socially. It’s keyword searchable and features the who, what, and where of local social and green choices to buy, eat and experience!

Guide to the Good connects people with the companies in their community that meet their needs. More than a directory, Guide to the Good shares stories behind the companies, so that people connect with the makers, sellers, and innovators in their community. Along with inside scoop on companies, Guide to the Good features stories from the community, about the community! Guest bloggers share their knowledge and stories from everywhere – their own backyards to around the world!

Guide to the Good is the social enterprise of thegreenrock.ca ~ Live Sustainably NL, a registered not-for-profit which promotes sustainable living where you are, and provides information and inspiration to answer challenges facing our planet, our communities, and our lives.

We built it because choosing local brings economic, ethical, environmental, and social benefits to our communities, and research by Guide to the Good’s parent company, thegreenrock.ca showed that people want to choose local more often, and they would if they knew what was available and how to access it.

It’s so great to make an interprovincial connection like this in service of a common cause and we hope to continue crossing paths with the Sustainable Enterprise Alliance and Guide to the Good!
